Almost every wedding reception includes dancing - often, lots of dancing - and it's hard to dance without music.  Hiring live musicians is a budgetary impossibility for many so a wedding DJ is the most common source of music.  Many DJ's also perform "master of ceremonies" duties, guiding the reception through the events desired by the bride.
